Poker is a game of skill and the ability to "read" your opponents and
certain situations in every hand that you are playing. Poker is also a
game of math, in which it is necessary for the player to know how to
calculate the probability of his winning hand as well as his
opponent's. Learning this kind of approach to poker is of great
significance to your career, and in many ways it will determine whether
you will become a successful player who at any moment knows how and in
what way a hand should be played in certain situations.
Will using math make you a great player, capable of great winnings?
This is one of the most common questions in poker today. Is winning
possible without involving math (poker odds) in your style of play? We
cannot assume that players who do not use a mathematical approach to
the game won't have any success, but it is certain that knowing these
kind of methods will improve your play and give you an advantage to
your opponents who do not use this form of poker strategy. Most poker
players are using math without even being aware of it.
Using mathematics for hands in which you have a Flush or Straight draw
Math can be used in a number of situations, but it is most often used
in situations where the player is waiting for the cards to make a Flush
or Straight after the flop (Flush or Straight draw). If your opponent
is making a bet when you have a Flush or Straight draw, you will be
facing a decision to either continue playing or fold and let your
opponent take the pot. In this type of situations, an experienced
player who is familiar with probabilities and the mathematical approach
to the game, is capable of making the right decision, whilst a player
who does not use these methods shall be very insecure and in the
majority of situations will make the wrong calls. This type of player,
who is unfamiliar with poker probabilities, will probably try to assume
how a professional player would play, or simply try out his luck and
see what happens. If there is a large bet at stake, most of
inexperienced players will think that the price to pay to try and get
the card that they need for a Flush or Straight is too high, while in
smaller bets, they will be tempted to continue playing and will almost
certainly call. Compared to them, an experienced player knows what his
odds are in this situation, and by using math will make the best
decision, given his knowledge. Nevertheless the first rule is to always
take to consideration the idea that your opponent is bluffing and, in
fact, he is holding far worse cards in his hands than you are. So be
careful and try to pay attention to details as much as you can - the
way that certain players at the table are behaving in certain
situations, how often do they play, with which cards they play etc.
A few important things you must never forget
One of the main things that you should know when math is used in poker,
is that the decisions that are made shall not have great impact on
winnings in a shorter period of time. But, in the long run, will have a
very positive effect on the bankroll. And even with all you've learned
about math in poker, and played a hand accordingly, doesn't guarantee
that you will win the pot. Of course, that doesn't mean that you've
made the wrong decision and played the hand badly. Simply put, luck is
sometimes an important factor in this game. If you continue with this
approach to poker, and use your knowledge of probabilities accordingly,
you will most certainly, in the long run, make significant winnings. It
is the main reason why you shouldn't allow that a hand lost here and
then affects making the right decisions. Learning to use math in poker
properly may be very difficult in the beginning, but it is highly
recommended, and those who last in this shall later be enjoying the
results of their torturing and sometimes very frustrating work.
